Warung Tumang Bali in Banjar Laplapan, Petulu: an open kitchen above working paddies, a short village walk from the market, calm enough that the stove is the loudest sound.

The short answer

Warung Tumang Bali in Banjar Laplapan, Petulu, is an open kitchen about 10 minutes from central Ubud with a view over working rice paddies. Guests walk the bunds for about half an hour, then cook with Chef Wayan in groups of up to eight. It is a village kitchen view, not a ticketed Tegallalang stop.

Working paddies, not a ticketed terrace

The kitchen at Warung Tumang Bali sits in Banjar Laplapan, Petulu, about 10 minutes from central Ubud. Outside the open cooking space you see farmed rice terraces, the same sawah the group walks on the way in. It is not Tegallalang: there is no ticket booth and no bus queue. The fields are still worked, and the view is the village you are cooking in.

Both sessions include that walk on the bunds, about half an hour at an easy pace. Closed shoes and a hat help. In the wet months the bunds get slick.

What the terrace view does for the class

You cook looking out over green water and coconut trees, not into a hotel corridor. Shared days stop at eight guests, so the table stays quiet enough to hear Chef Wayan explain the paste. A welcome drink arrives before the grind; lunch or dinner is the meal you made, eaten at the same table.

Morning sessions run 8:30am to about 12:30pm and start at the Ubud morning market. Afternoon sessions run 2:30pm to 5:30pm, skip the market, and end in dinner as the Petulu herons come in to roost.

Calm village vibes, without inventing a spa day

Petulu is a residential village north of Ubud, short of the Tegallalang road. Flower offerings sit on the path; step around them. You are not in central Ubud traffic for the cooking hours. That is the calm: small group, village lane, rice view, English teaching at a real warung stove.

Pickup and drop-off are free from hotels and villas in the main Ubud area. Staying further south? An optional private shuttle is IDR 650.000 once per booking, or meet us on site with your own driver; we send the pin with your confirmation.

How this differs from a rice-terrace photo stop

Tegallalang is worth a separate dawn visit for the terraces themselves. Pair it with this kitchen on another half-day: cook in Petulu when you want the paddies as the setting for the meal, not as the whole outing. The class fee is IDR 350.000 per guest shared, or IDR 700.000 for a private kitchen.

Questions before you book

Does the cooking class overlook rice fields?
Yes. The Petulu kitchen looks onto farmed terraces in Banjar Laplapan, and both sessions include a short walk through those fields before cooking.
Is this the same as Tegallalang rice terraces?
No. Tegallalang is a separate paid viewpoint further north. Petulu’s paddies are the working fields around the kitchen, without a ticket booth.
How many guests share the kitchen?
Shared days stop at eight. Private kitchens are available at IDR 700.000.
