Book the class beside the paddies

The short answer
Warung Tumang Bali in Banjar Laplapan, Petulu, is a Balinese cooking class beside working rice terraces: about half an hour walking the bunds, then hands-on cooking with Chef Wayan in an open kitchen that looks onto the paddies. About 10 minutes from central Ubud. Shared IDR 350.000 per guest (max 8); private IDR 700.000. Morning adds the market; afternoon ends in dinner.

Terraces you walk, then cook beside
Warung Tumang Bali sits in Banjar Laplapan, Petulu, with working rice terraces outside the open kitchen. Before you grind base genep, you walk those paddies for about half an hour on the bunds — flat village paths, not a trek. Then you cook looking out over the same green water and coconut trees.
This is not a ticketed photo stop. The fields are still farmed. The kitchen is about 10 minutes from central Ubud, depending on traffic. Shared days stop at eight guests so the table stays quiet enough to hear Chef Wayan Suryana teach in English.
What you get for the fee
Shared class IDR 350.000 per guest. Private kitchen IDR 700.000. Included: free pickup and drop-off from hotels and villas in the main Ubud area, a welcome drink, hands-on cooking (stone mortar for the paste, then 10+ dishes such as sambal matah, sate lilit, and usually dadar gulung), the meal you cooked, and a printed recipe booklet. The kitchen looks onto the rice terraces.
Morning session 8:30am–12:30pm: Ubud morning market, rice-field walk, cook, lunch. Afternoon 2:30pm–5:30pm: rice-field walk, cook, dinner — no market. From Seminyak, Sanur, Uluwatu, and other south Bali stays, an optional private shuttle is IDR 650.000 once per booking, or meet us on site with your own driver.
Honest about Tegallalang
Tegallalang is a separate viewpoint further north with an entry fee and tour buses. Pair it on another half-day if you want the famous terrace photos. Petulu is where you cook: the paddies are the setting for the class, not a paid overlook you leave before lunch.
If your search is for a cooking class near rice terraces in Ubud, this is the village version — walk, stove, and meal in one place. The kitchen-view page has more on the open stove; the planner guide covers how to fit the walk into a Ubud day.
Why the rice matters on the plate
Nasi kuning, the turmeric coconut rice under the feast, is cooked while sate and sambal finish. Seeing the fields first makes the bowl less abstract: the rice grows a short walk from the warung. Vegetarian and vegan guests cook at the same stove; shrimp paste comes out of the grind when you ask.
